How does the IBDP work?
Under the IB Diploma Programme, students select six subjects, with certain core areas—such as Mathematics—being compulsory. These subjects are studied at two levels of difficulty:
• Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL)
• Students must take three subjects at HL and three at SL
• The choice of HL subjects is particularly important, as they can influence university admissions and future study options
In addition to these six subjects, all IB students complete the IB Core, which includes:
• Theory of Knowledge (TOK): A course that explores how we know what we know, encouraging philosophical reflection and critical thinking
• Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS): Involves meaningful experiences outside the classroom, such as artistic projects, physical activities, and community service
• Extended Essay (EE): A 4,000-word independent research paper on a topic of the student’s choice, providing excellent preparation for academic writing at university
The IB programme offers a broad and balanced education, designed not only to challenge students academically but also to foster personal growth, resilience, and global awareness.

What is the IBDP Core?
At the heart of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) lies the IB Core, a trio of essential components designed to enrich students' educational journey beyond academic subjects. These three elements—Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS), and the Extended Essay (EE)—are central to the IB’s mission to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people.
Each part of the Core supports personal and academic growth:
• Theory of Knowledge (TOK):
- Encourages students to reflect on the nature of knowledge
- Explores how knowledge is constructed and evaluated across different subject areas
- Develops critical thinking and open-mindedness
• Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS):
- Involves participation in artistic expression (Creativity), physical activity (Activity), and community involvement (Service)
- Promotes balance, well-being, and social responsibility
- Encourages students to engage with real-world challenges outside the classroom
• Extended Essay (EE):
- A 4,000-word independent research paper on a topic chosen by the student
- Builds skills in research, analysis, academic writing, and time management
- Provides excellent preparation for university-level coursework
Together, these components ensure students become not only academically capable but also reflective, compassionate, and engaged global citizens.
University preparation
The IBDP prepares students exceptionally well for university by fostering strong academic skills, intellectual curiosity, and independent learning. Its rigorous curriculum challenges students to think critically, manage their time effectively, and approach problems from multiple perspectives—skills that are highly valued in higher education.
Through the Extended Essay, students gain experience in conducting independent research and producing university-style academic writing, while Theory of Knowledge encourages analytical thinking and the ability to form well-reasoned arguments.
Additionally, the emphasis on balance, reflection, and global awareness—particularly through CAS—helps students develop the resilience, adaptability, and interpersonal skills needed to thrive in a diverse and demanding university environment.
