Spanish Bachillerato in TEMS

Study Spanish Bachillerato in Madrid

Excel in the Spanish Bachillerato. Specialised pathways, bilingual support, and top EvAU results prepare you for Spanish and international universities.

The Spanish Bachillerato is a two-year academic program typically undertaken by students aged 16 to 18 after completing compulsory secondary education (ESO). It prepares students for higher education or vocational training, offering specialised tracks such as Sciences, Humanities, and Arts.

At TEMS, the Bachillerato is enriched with key Montessori principles—fostering independence, self-discipline, and intrinsic motivation—while maintaining academic rigor. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning through guided choice, collaborative projects, and reflective practices, creating a holistic environment that bridges traditional Spanish curriculum with the values of Montessori education.

At the Pre-University stage at TEMS, students can choose from three rigorous academic pathways: A Levels, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), or the Spanish Baccalaureate, with specialisations in Sciences, Humanities, or Social Sciences.

Our outstanding results consistently open doors to top universities around the world, a testament to our dedication to academic excellence and personalised learning.

How does the Spanish Bachillerato work?

At TEMS, students entering the Spanish Bachillerato choose between two main academic pathways: Sciences and Technology or Humanities and Social Sciences. Both tracks share a set of four common core subjects designed to provide a strong general foundation:
• Lengua (Spanish Language)
• Filosofía (Philosophy)
• Inglés (English)
• Educación Física (Physical Education)

In the Sciences and Technology modality, students take Mathematics and Physics & Chemistry as required subjects. They then choose one additional subject from:
• Tecnología e Ingeniería (Technology & Engineering)
• Biología (Biology)
• Dibujo Técnico (Technical Drawing)

Meanwhile, the Humanities and Social Sciences pathway includes subjects such as Applied Mathematics, Latin, Economics, and Contemporary World History. Students personalize their curriculum further by selecting one optional subject, which can be chosen from the same pool for both modalities:
• Francés (French)
• Ciencias de la Computación (Computer Science)
• Literatura Universal (World Literature)
• Biología, Geología y Ciencias Ambientales (Biology, Geology & Environmental Sciences)

What makes TEMS different?

What makes TEMS truly different is its deep understanding of each student’s individual needs and learning journey. Rooted in the Montessori philosophy, the school fosters autonomy, curiosity, and a love of learning that goes beyond the classroom. Teachers at TEMS bring a wealth of experience and long-standing dedication, creating a stable and supportive academic environment. Language learning is taken seriously, with students continuing to study English at a very high level—reaching C1 Advanced in the first year and C2 Proficiency in the second—as well as French, with opportunities to attain DELF B1 and B2 certifications.

Academic flexibility is another key strength at TEMS. Subjects like Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry are taught starting from the level each student needs, ensuring no one is left behind. Additional support classes are also available in core areas such as Maths, Spanish Language, Chemistry, and Physics. Beyond the academic curriculum, students benefit from a wide range of extracurricular activities, including debate tournaments, volunteer projects, and dedicated university orientation programs—helping shape not only strong students but confident, well-rounded individuals.

University preparation

Accessing university in Spain through the Bachillerato at TEMS involves understanding the different paths available for public and private institutions. For public universities, admission is based on a system called the nota de corte (cut-off mark), which varies depending on the degree and university. This final score, known as the CAU, is calculated as follows: 60% from the student’s Bachillerato average and 40% from the compulsory general phase of the PAU (university entrance exams). Students can research cut-off scores online to plan accordingly.

For private universities, the admission process usually begins before the PAU exams and tends to be more holistic. It typically includes submitting academic transcripts from previous years (Years 10, 11, and the first year of Bachillerato), taking specific entrance exams, attending interviews, and sometimes providing letters of recommendation. At TEMS, students are guided through each step of the process to ensure they are well-prepared for whichever path they choose.

How to access the Spanish Bachillerato

To access the Spanish Bachillerato at TEMS, students must meet specific academic requirements that ensure the equivalency (homologación) of their secondary studies with the Spanish education system. This includes having passed at least four IGCSE subjects with grades between 4 and 9 during Year 11. Additionally, students must have successfully completed Spanish Language and Social Sciences across the four years of secondary education (Years 8 to 11).

The homologation process is managed directly by the school and is initiated at the end of Year 11. TEMS provides guidance and support throughout this procedure to ensure a smooth transition into the Bachillerato stage. Meeting these requirements allows students to continue their education within the Spanish system while benefiting from the school’s unique bilingual and Montessori-informed approach.

In the Sixth Form at TEMS, education is not just about grades; it’s about crafting futures, fostering excellence, and preparing students for a world where their potential knows no bounds.
